Researchers have found out that the bacteria responsible for the illness enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli or the ETEC can make you very miserable. The bacteria usually attaches to the surface of “pili” or fimbriae” to attach itself and these fibers are found in the intestine of the host.

Esther Bullitt, an associate professor in the department of physiology and biophysics at Boston University School of Medicine, the study’s senior author has told that the atomic resolution details of the proteins in the fibers and other genetic variation tests show that the bacterial strains contains a different outer surface of the major protein while maintaining the protein components that are buried within the fiber.

Just because of this the antibodies which are produced against the ETEC during an episode of infection are not often protective against other infections. Infection  with ETEC would cause watery diarrhea and abdominal cramping. All other symptoms like nausea, chills, loss of appetite, headache can also occur. Thus with all this research going on this may lead to producing a vaccine for the same.
